Becoming a member of the Kelly Canyon Ski Patrol is a year-long process including a combination of classroom study, hands-on scenarios, individual study, and on-the-hill training.
- In February the patrol sponsors a "Ski With the Patrol" day. On this day you will ski the slopes of Kelly Canyon with patrollers and show off your skills on the mountain. The patrollers will decide if they believe you have what it takes to advance to the next step. The patrollers are looking for a combination of:
Ability, Attitude, Availability
- Next, you will enroll in National Ski Patrol and become an Outdoor Emergency Care (OEC) candidate. You will also enroll in a course of classroom and online study. This OEC course will provide education of both didactic and the skills needed to be on the patrol and time to practice. This is a ten-week course taught by an OEC Instructor of Record and other OEC Instructors. The class is 10 weeks long and includes three hours per week of in-class instruction, a minimum of 10 hours per week of online and individual study, and the completion of the OEC written Final Exam and Practical Exam. Candidates must pass with 80% or higher.
- Once the OEC study is complete, the fun begins on the ski hill. For two months, twice a week, you will be on the slopes learning Skiing/Snowboarding and Toboggan (S&T) training. Great fun!
